Going Modal! Phrygian

Lesson 4 in the Going Modal lesson series is on the Phrygian Mode.

What does Phrygian sound like?

Wherever I May Roam - Metallica

Symphony of Destruction - Megadeath

War - Joe Satriani

Careful with That Axe, Eugene - Pink Floyd

Not just Metal/Rock either; lots of Flamenco music uses it.

In Jazz, Gil Evans' "Solea" on Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain" album is in Phrygian.

The first half of the Prologue melody (accompanying the opening sequence) of the film, "Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring" is Phrygian.

It occurs in classical music as well; Bach, Heinrich Schütz, Anton Bruckner, Philip Glass and many others.

How do you get to the Phrygian Mode on the guitar? Simple; flat the 2nd of the Natural Minor Scale.

Don't know the Natural Minor Scale? So yeah, this is a lesson series; this lesson is built on what came before. Have you been through what came before? Here's what comes before:

Lesson 1: The Archetypes – The Major Scale/Ionian Mode

Lesson 2: The Natural/Pure Minor Scale/Aeolian Mode

Lesson 3: Dorian

And before all the above, there is the 5-Lesson Foundational Series.

If you haven't gone through the 5-Lesson Foundational Series, download it for free from the above link. I prompt site members and non-site members alike to do it; everything I teach is predicated on it.

The Locrian Distinctive: “... I need to discuss the reasons why this sound is so specialized and the resulting confusion among beginning and intermediate players concerning its use.”

1972 Alvarez-Yairi: This story is actually about 2 guitars. My '72 Alvarez-Yairi was preceded by a Martin N-20 nylon string classical guitar that I bought new in 1975.

Jam Tales: Karmic Buildup: “... it wouldn't look good for the charity Mama Ray was raising money for to have one of her performers arrested onstage!”
