Concepts for Comping: 4-VOICE OPEN AND CLOSE POSITION CHORDS

We will now take the 3-note (Root, 3rd, 7th) open and close-voiced chords that we have been working with and add a note on the 2nd string. On the 6th-string Root the default will be a 5th, on the 5th-string Root it will be a 9th. Here are the Major chord types:

Open voice Gmaj7, Close voice Cmaj9

There are 4 more types; Dominant, Minor, Half-Diminished and Full-Diminished - so check out the lesson!

Video Lesson: Target Notes

Lesson 2: 3rds & 7ths

This is from a 5-lesson series called, “Target Notes.” “Target Notes” is a small part of the MUCH larger series (42 lessons!) called “Concepts for Basic Improvising.”

Everything in Concepts for Basic Improvising is related to the Minor Pentatonic Scale in a Blues context; no fancy chords or confusing modal theory - just easily applicable concepts to a scale you probably already know.

Man! Everytime I look at these older videos I see so much wrong from a production standpoint. I was learning as I went along. There is no way I can go back and redo them. I have 472 videos on Master Guitar School's YouTube Channel and I'm adding more all the time. So it is what it is. Hopefully, the production quality does not distract from the content.

Most of the videos are set to "unlisted" and can only be accessed through MasterGuitarSchool.com's lesson downloads, online guitar lessons and Blog.

Tune of the Month

On Broadway

This, of course, hearkens back to George Benson's version of this song. He wasn't the first guitar player to scat in unison with a guitar solo. I remember hearing that for the first time at a concert in probably 1971. I can't remember the name of the band. I thought it was cool at the time, but for some reason it didn't “take.” I'm sure the technique predates 1971.

Anyway, George Benson is the guy that popularized it in a Pop context with “This Masquerade” in 1976. I was blown away by that version and have been scatting with solos now and then ever since.

This recording is from my CD, Channeling Harold, featuring Rich VanSant on Hammond B3 and Kevin Johnson on drums.

How About 5 Lessons?

The 5-Lesson Foundational Series teaches the Circle of Keys as an organizational mechanism by which you ensure that whatever you learn is drilled in every key in all possible positions. It also gives you a method to find any note, anywhere, without memorizing note names on every string. That is a beautiful thing!

Almost every lesson I teach presupposes these 5 lessons.

You can download the 5-Lesson Foundational Series right here with no further obligation or commitment:
