Concepts for Comping: Lesson 28

II-V-I in Minor Keys

In a minor key:

  • II is half-diminished, AKA “Minor7(b5).”

  • V is dominant, sometimes with an altered 9th (see paragraph below).

  • I is Minor 7.

When in a 6th-string key, the V chord has an altered 9th – either sharped or flatted (we'll get into altered chords in more detail in the next lesson):

Guitar chord diagrams for II (open), V (close), I (open) show finger placement with colored dots and numbers on grids, labeled for clarity.

Video Lesson: 9th Chords in the Blues

A 9th can be added to any chord but most commonly in the Blues it is added to a Dominant 7 chord. I’m going to give you two 9th chord shapes; one has the root on the 6th string and the other has the root on the 5th string. Those two shapes are all you need to play the Blues with 9th chords:

Cowboy Chords Search Results: Why is the sales page for my lesson series, “Cowboy Chords: A Deep Dive into 1st Position Fingerings and Application” number one in the google rankings? Among other things, I push back against the notion that Cowboy Chords are really “beginner level” content. It is true that they are among the first things a beginner guitarist usually learns. However, there are actually some fairly sophisticated things going on from a music theory standpoint that just automatically happen when one learns Cowboy Chords by rote.

Tune of the Month

Rearview:

This is from my CD, Sound Tracks. The tunes on this recording were chosen to accompany a documentary film produced in 1996 called “Warbonnets on the High Iron.” That film was released under the auspices of White River Productions, Inc., and consists of images of the Santa Fe Railroad from northern Missouri to the end of the line in California. One tune, “Rearview,” was written specifically for the video. The rest of the tunes were chosen from the existing catalogue of music I have written and recorded from the early 70s up to the current time.

How About 5 Lessons?

The 5-Lesson Foundational Series teaches the Circle of Keys as an organizational mechanism by which you ensure that whatever you learn is drilled in every key in all possible positions. It also gives you a method to find any note, anywhere, without memorizing note names on every string. That is a beautiful thing!

Almost every lesson I teach presupposes these 5 lessons.

You can download the 5-Lesson Foundational Series right here with no further obligation or commitment:
