CONCEPTS FOR COMPING: LESSON 23: I-VI-II-V-I (4-VOICE)

Continuing our drills through diatonic chord progressions using 4-voice open and close position chords. This month's lesson is on I-VI-II-V-I.

Key of C ascends to VI (open to close):

The next key around the Circle (F) descends to VI (close to open):

...and so on around the Key Circle. Notice that Open to Close ascends from I to VI and Close to Open descends from I to VI.

VIDEO LESSON: BLUES IN OPEN G

I do NOT mean an open G tuning. This is in standard tuning. Not many people play a shuffle on a cowboy G chord. You also have a shuffle on the C chord, which is also not common.

The lesson above is one out of 12 lessons in Unit 2: The Blues

Check it out.

Variations on the Flat-Five Walk-Down: I have been playing the guitar for almost 60 years. I'm flabbergasted I hadn't figured this out decades ago. I’ll be using some of these on my next gig! It's never too late to learn.

THE JAM CONTINUES!

For those of you who are local to Kansas City, Diane “Mama” Ray passed away on August 24, 2025. She had hosted the longest running jam session in Kansas City history. She celebrated her 39th Anniversary Jam 3 weeks before her death. Per her wishes, we are continuing the Jam with singer Lori Tucker hosting. The details concerning the continuation of the jam, which has been renamed, “Mama Ray's Legacy Jam Featuring Lori Tucker” are at The Jam Continues!

In that post, there are links to a history of that Jam, as well as a link to my tribute to Mama Ray, written shortly after her passing.

TUNE OF THE MONTH

When a Man Loves a Woman

So with the above in mind, I thought I would make this month's Tune of the Month about Mama Ray.

This performance is from the 10th Anniversary Jam in 1996. That Jam has run continuously in Kansas City since 1984 and is still ongoing! You can read an account of this historical jam session from its beginning up to 2023 HERE.

How About 5 Lessons?

The 5-Lesson Foundational Series teaches the Circle of Keys as an organizational mechanism by which you ensure that whatever you learn is drilled in every key in all possible positions. It also gives you a method to find any note, anywhere, without memorizing note names on every string. That is a beautiful thing!

Almost every lesson I teach presupposes these 5 lessons.

You can download the 5-Lesson Foundational Series right here with no further obligation or commitment:
