Concepts for Comping: Lesson 24
Continuing our drills through diatonic chord progressions using 4-voice open and close position chords. This month there are two progressions rather than one; they are related:
1) III-VI-II-V-I
2) III-bIIIx-II-bIIx-I
The “x” in number two means, “Dominant.”
The relationship is due to the fact that the bIIIx is a substitute for VI and the bIIx is a substitute for V.
This is known as a “Dominant Tritone Substitution.” I have a download on the Tritone Sub if you want more info on that. Normally it's $19.95 but I'll make it free until the end of the month because I love ya! Go HERE for that free download.

Polytone Amps: I loved the sound; clean, warm, dark and round. For rock or pop it could be brightened up and it also worked great with pedals.
2025 Photo Retrospective: I play other gigs besides the Saturday Jam at BB’s, but this years’ retrospective is necessarily dominated by BB’s. That’s because Mama Ray passed away in August and so I wanted to make sure the transition of the Jam from Mama Ray to Lori Tucker was well-documented.

Tune of the Month
Cut the Cake
This is a live cut Recorded at the Tuba, a club in Kansas City, on August 3, 1991, when I was working with Kevin Mahogany. I wrote a blog on that whole episode; Remembering Kevin Mahogany. Kevin later became famous as a Jazz singer but when I worked with him we did a lot of Classic and Contemporary Soul, Funk and R&B. This tune was originally by the Average White Band.

How About 5 Lessons?
The 5-Lesson Foundational Series teaches the Circle of Keys as an organizational mechanism by which you ensure that whatever you learn is drilled in every key in all possible positions. It also gives you a method to find any note, anywhere, without memorizing note names on every string. That is a beautiful thing!
Almost every lesson I teach presupposes these 5 lessons.
You can download the 5-Lesson Foundational Series right here with no further obligation or commitment:
